Positivity Week 10: Self Care – Don’t Forget About You

Writer's picture: Becky O'HaireBecky O'Haire

Over the next 12 weeks, I will be presenting an aspect of positivity or mindfulness for us to focus on. These are all topics that I am working on myself and focusing on myself to achieve a happier mindset and calmer state of being. I’ll have a blog post each week and then quotes on my social media networks to support that week’s theme. For more support, join my Positivity Facebook Community. The 12 weeks will all be on my Positive Thinking Page.

Last week’s focus was on spreading kindness. I thoroughly enjoyed that focus! This week we are back to ourselves and looking after yourself, a little thing called self-care.

Way back at week 2 we focused on loving ourselves. It’s not always an easy thing to do. But if you really think about it, you truly deserve your own love as much as anyone else in this world does!

When you start to love and care for yourself, things begin to change for the better. And you deserve it! So this week, we are all about self-care!

Taking Care of Yourself Helps Others

With loving yourself and caring about your own welfare comes taking care of yourself. Self-care is essential to not only your own well being but for the well being of your loved ones.

Some of us feel like it’s selfish to take care of yourself. Or that we simply don’t’ have the time to do it… myself included here. So if you need a reason other than self-love to care for yourself, then how about it’s better for everyone around you??

If you are depleted then you have nothing to give to others! Self-care is not selfish, you cannot serve from an empty vessel.

So what exactly is Self-Care?

Hopefully, I have convinced you that you deserve your own love and when you love someone, you want them to be cared for. So, you deserve self-care! And even if I haven’t convinced you of this, hopefully, I have convinced you that you need to care for yourself in order to care for others!

So what do we mean by self-care anyway?

Self-care, in a nutshell, is freeing yourself from anything that isn’t good for your health.

Removing yourself from upsetting or negative people or situations as well as eating better and staying in a positive mindset is truly loving and caring for yourself.

Self-care is holding yourself with respect and not allowing yourself to be overworked or worried. Step back from or change the things that bring upset. Feed your body and soul with good food and good positive thoughts.

It’s also letting go of things that can’t be changed. This quote sums it up so nicely…

Let’s Make a Plan

This is all well and good reading these quotes and feeling inspired but turning that into a real life change is another thing. I don’t want you to leave my blog without a plan to take care of yourself this week. So let’s make a plan right now.

Grab a piece of paper or go into notes on your phone. Type out the things that popped to your mind while reading this post that you’d like to change. Things like diet, doing too much every day, never saying no, etc. And write the things you need to accept or even forgive & release.

I’m not going to suggest taking quiet time for yourself every day, although of course, it’d be a great idea. But I know we are all busy and it’s not always practical.

So what I am going to suggest instead is to pause and take some deep breaths. Do it right now. And do it when you feel stressed. And deep breaths when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

I have tips for a super simple meditation that just focuses on your breath which you can do anywhere at any time. And doing that is taking care of yourself, not taking on stress or doing too much.

Don’t overload your list, pick a few items to change, to let go of and remember your deep breaths. I’d love to hear how you get on in the comments or on social media.

I have some uplifting and motivating self-care quotes to share with you this week. Follow Cuddle Fairy on social media for your daily dose of positivity. Have a great week & take care of yourself. xx
