How to style your bedroom in a small apartment

Styling a bedroom in a small apartment may sound like a job no one would want, but creating a stunning space is easier than you think.

Look at the bright side - small spaces can feel way more intimate and welcoming than massive ones when styled correctly. Plus, you don’t have to buy as much stuff, so you’ll save money (provided you don’t go crazy shopping).

Join us below for tips on styling your bedroom in a small apartment.

Choose a space-saving bed

  • A space-saving bed can increase your floor space, storage space, or visual space. Here are some examples:

  • Divan beds have a mattress base that is the same width and length as your mattress, so they take up less room than standard bed frames.

  • Ottoman beds have built-in storage and use the whole base, giving you all the storage you need for bedding.

Low bed frames lack built-in storage space but lower the eyeline of your bedroom, creating the illusion of more floor space.

Ottoman beds

Ottoman beds deserve a special mention because they give you significantly more storage space than beds with drawers.

The underside of your mattress is large enough for all your bedding, seasonal clothes, shoes, and other bits and bobs. Vacuum packing these or storing things in storage boxes can help you organise things even more.

Embrace minimalism

A small apartment is the perfect opportunity to embrace minimalism to maximise space, reduce clutter, and create a serene environment.

Minimalist principles include only keeping what you need, prioritising high-quality items, and using white space to create space.

Minimalism can look boring by stripping away characters. Still, it’s easy enough to make interesting with pops of colour, varied textures, unique statement pieces, personal artwork, and plants for life and vibrancy.

For instance, you could display a unique, sculptural floor lamp that doubles as functional art and hang macramé plant hangers with trailing greenery to add visual interest.

Avoid bulky furniture

Your small apartment bedroom is no place for a bulky wardrobe and chest of drawers.

It’s best to combine furniture where possible, such as a wardrobe with drawers that let you replace your chest of drawers for good.

Tall, narrow furniture is another useful small apartment hack – get a tall, narrow drawer set rather than a low and wide one to save floor space.

Fold-out desk

If your apartment bedroom is tiny – we’re talking hardly any space to move around – then a fold-out desk is a fantastic addition if you have the wall space.

Fold-out desks take up little floor space, and you can use a fold-out chair to ensure everything takes up little space when not in use.

An even better project is to install a fold-out desk in a wall recess by knocking through the plasterboard and building a stud frame inside it – that’ll stop your fold-out desk from encroaching into your room space on the wall.

Custom carpentry

Custom shelving or cabinetry designed to fit your space perfectly will transform your bedroom for the better.

Built-in wardrobes are popular, but they can be costly. A cheaper option is buying a made-to-measure wardrobe online.

Go for high-class décor

Your small bedroom will look miles better with classy décor, such as an original painting or limited edition print by a renowned artist, an iconic designer chair, or a custom-made sofa, rather than something cheap and cheerful.

A large, well-maintained indoor tree or a curated collection of rare plants will help give your apartment a touch of natural class.

Make lighting a focal point

Install dimmable LED recessed lights for clean, even illumination, but also add wall lights to give your bedroom a softer feel at night.

Crystal light fixtures are popular in 2024, but they can look gaudy. Check out brass fixtures to add a golden touch to your bedroom.

You can also add ambient lighting with fairy lights wrapped around furniture and adhesive LED strips. For a bit of interest, get the colour-changeable type.
