How to bring tartan into your home and keep it tasteful

Patterns can be scary. Some of us just aren’t as adventurous as others when it comes to decorating our home, and that’s alright. Striving for tasteful and subtle doesn’t have to mean no patterns, it just requires a little more thought when finding ways to incorporate them into your home.

If you’re still left wondering how you can maintain your tasteful theme and still bring tartan into your home then read on, as we give you some tips and tricks to get you started.

Wallpaper

Whilst a fair few of us have fallen victim to the old “tartan paint” trick, there is in fact a large array of tartan wallpaper on offer, featuring various hues to match almost any colour scheme. You can go subtle with your colour palette, but this option remains more suitable for someone wanting a bolder look.

Tone things down somewhat by keeping the wallpaper to one wall – a feature wall. This works well in a master bedroom or large living space. With one wall of your bedroom plastered in such a bold print, a dark mahogany-style bedframe will work nicely against it, whilst also minimising the initial impact of the pattern.

Bedding

Staying in the bedroom, but moving closer towards the focal point, tartan luxury bed linen is also a nice choice. Another bonus to keeping the tartan print limited to your bedding is that it’s easily changeable and requires little-to-no commitment. If the interlocking colours keep you up at night – you can simply put your usual style of bedding back on. Easy!

A blue-toned tartan will offer a light and positive effect, reflecting the natural light that comes in from the windows. These colours are a perfect way to create a sense of more space and help you stay energised from the moment you wake up.

Carpets

Not for the fainthearted, a predominantly wood-focussed room is a perfect place to lay out a tartan carpet, or large rug. Keep things lowkey with a Black Watch tartan on the floor and lighter coloured walls to counteract the darker tones.

If keeping things light is your priority, then limit the use of this darker pattern to smaller rooms and spaces. A neutral-toned tartan consisting of beige and cream stripes may be best suited to somewhere like the living room, and is more likely to transition alongside the seasons.

Cushions and Throws

If you’re apprehensive about incorporating tartan into your home, then a patterned throw or set of scatter cushions are the best way to go. They can be easily moved around and, worst way, discarded, if you find that tartan just isn’t for you. Match the tones of your tartan accessories with other furniture in your chosen room. E.g., if you’re using tartan to jazz up a set of cream dining room chairs, then patterned cushions that feature cream alongside similar tones such as beige and brown will be the best fit.

Spice up a neutral sofa with a red-toned throw or blanket. The warm tones will brighten the room and act as a cosy addition to those cold winter nights. What’s not to love?
