Everything you need to know about baserails

collaborative guest post

If you're feeling that it's time to rejuvenate your stairs, or you're looking to install a brand-new staircase in a renovation project, you need to know what stair parts to invest in.

Throughout this blog, the professionals at Stair Crazy explain the ins and outs of baserails - the foundation of your balustrade that provides a solid base for your spindles to slot onto and runs parallel to your handrail, supported by the newel posts.

But what else do these stair components offer? Keep reading to find out more...

Why do our homes need baserails?

Your baserails, also known as bottom tracks, serve multiple purposes on your staircase, and are more than simply the structural backbone of your balustrade. It's a good idea to consult an expert such as Staircases Glasgow to help you with your staircase decisions and design.

Baserails are an essential safety feature on your staircase

Without a stair baserail, you couldn't accommodate spindles into your balustrade. Spindles help to form a barrier at the edge of the staircase, helping to prevent falls and subsequent accidents.

What's more, baserails provide a sturdy foundation that offers more stability to your handrail, preventing it from wobbling whilst in use - assisting people to stabilise themselves on the staircase and effectively help to prevent trips or falls.

Baserails add to our interior style

Thanks to a great range of deluxe materials, baserails can enhance the decor in our hallway and landing areas. Dark hardwood, such as walnut or painted black oak, exudes class and premium quality, helping to really draw the eye and make your staircase a significant style feature in your home.

Lighter materials, such as oak and white primed wood, are just as elegant, offering a sophisticated look that looks fantastic among most home aesthetics. The luxurious tones of the natural oak grain are especially desirable, creating a timeless feel unrivalled by most other woods.

What type of baserails do I need?

There are several types of baserails available, so you need to select the design that meets your needs - they are as follows:

Grooved

Baserails with grooves have a track running through their centre for spindles to seamlessly slot into - these grooves vary in size depending on your spindle size - you can select between 32mm or 41mm wide channels.

Grooved for glass

Designed specifically for contemporary glass panels, grooved for glass baserails also feature a track through their middle. However, this channel is much deeper than that of regular grooved baserails to accommodate the glass panels found on modern staircases.

Ungrooved

This style of baserail is entirely solid and doesn't feature a groove - instead, each spindle is screwed into this baserail's surface, which can accommodate metal or wooden spindles, as well as brackets for glass panels.

When shopping for stair parts to breathe new life into your stairs, don't neglect to update your stair baserail - this component is often overlooked as a decorative feature, but it can actually boost the appearance of your home, as well as keep stair users safe!
