Winter can be a challenging time for your skin. The cold outside and heat inside can cause our skin to get dry, cracked, and irritated. Once dryness starts, our skin can start to crack and bleed and become quite sore.
Thankfully there are some simple and effective ways to combat the winter blues for your skin and keep your skin happy and healthy in the winter months.
1. Question the Quality of What you Are Using
As you probably know, our skin is the largest organ in our body! When you start thinking of your skin as an organ that is absorbing what is applied to it, it becomes important to become more aware of the products that you rub onto your skin.
Everything you use should come into question. Consider products such as your hand soap, face creams, body wash, lotions, shaving cream, hand creams, pain relief creams and so on. Check the ingredients and consider making changes to products that contain chemicals or harsh ingredients that might be detrimental to your skin.
2. Use Natural Pain Relief
I've used Arnica for pain relief for years now. I find it super effective. I use it both for myself and for my kids because it is natural, safe and helps the body heal.
Doctor Hoy’s Natural Arnica Boost is a natural anti-inflammatory that provides long-lasting pain relief. I use it for joint pain, bruises and any skin irritation or impact injury. The best part is that it is toxin, paraben and aspirin-free. It is natural and contains arnica, MSM & aloe vera.
3. Consider Nightly Hand Cream
There are great benefits from applying a hand cream at night. Firstly, you can use a nice thick formula without worrying about your hands being sticky during the day. Secondly, the cream gets the entire night to work its magic on your skin without being washed off.
I have been using Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream for decades. It is a glycerin-rich formula that relieves dry hands very quickly. And most importantly, it restores and protects the skin barrier, leaving my hands softer and smoother. It prevents my skin from cracking or becoming sore. I rub it into my hands before bed most nights and I couldn't be happier with the results!
4. Look for Gentle Body Wash
I switched to gentle, fragrance-free or naturally fragranced body wash years ago which has made a positive impact on my skin. If you have dry or sensitive skin, look for a moisturising body wash that is free of harsh chemicals.
It's also important to read the ingredient list and avoid any potential allergens or irritants. It is very important to read the ingredients because not everything that is fragrance-free is going to be natural or contain good ingredients.
5. Choose Skin Friendly Shampoo & Conditioners
Don't forget about the shampoo and conditioners that you use. These affect your skin as well, not only on the top of your head but over your body. As you rinse out your shampoo and conditioner, it will run down your body.
Also, keep an eye out for shampoos and conditioners that moisturise. I personally adore the Aveeno Oat Milk Blend shampoo and conditioner. It is a daily moisture for dry hair and soothes the scalp at the same time. It's sulfate-free and made with colloidal oats.
With a few changes in products, you can make a big difference for your skin this winter. Keep an eye out for natural ingredients, and ingredients that will moisturize and help protect your skin in the harsh winter conditions.
