5 Hospital Bag Must-Haves Mums Often Miss

When most expectant mums start to pack their hospital bag, they go with a “better to have and not need, than to need and not have” approach! However, you may start to find yourself quickly running out of space. The best packing tip you can ever utilize is to make a list before you start packing. Your bag can only hold so many items so make sure that you carry everything that you require and bid farewell to the “just in case” items you are itching to pack. This will make space for important items that many expectant mums overlook when packing their hospital bags.

Breast Pump

If you are going to breastfeed your baby for the first few months, it is a good idea to pack your pump. The lactation nurses at the hospital will be able to help you get comfortable using the device so that you face fewer issues when you start pumping. Wearable pumps are an excellent option as they provide a comfortable, hands-free and discreet experience. You can check out user reviews and expert advice on the various pumps in the market to help you choose the best breast pump for your needs.

Nursing Pillow

As a new mum, you will not be used to holding your baby in the breastfeeding position for extended periods. Holding your baby in a specific position for feeding will strain the muscles in your arm that aren't used to that kind of sustained activity.

Furthermore, newborns typically need to feed frequently, sometimes every couple of hours or more often which is more likely to cause arm fatigue. Breastfeeding pillows are designed to provide support and comfort for both you and your baby during breastfeeding sessions. They also help position your baby at the correct height and angle for a proper latch, which is essential for effective breastfeeding and preventing nipple soreness.

Even if your hospital provides nursing pillows, it’s unlikely that they will offer the same level of support and comfort compared to the ones available in the market.

Nipple Cream

The skin on the areolas is very delicate and sensitive. During the initial days of breastfeeding when both you and your baby are still learning the proper latch and positioning, you are at a high risk of raw, sore or even bleeding nipples. Nipple cream can help prevent these problems as well as treat them and provide relief from discomfort.  When choosing a nipple cream, look for one that is breastfeeding-safe, contains moisturizing ingredients and does not contain additional ingredients such as petroleum chemicals and artificial flavours.

Entertainment Devices and Chargers

TV shows often portray childbirth as a quick and dramatic event, condensing hours of labour into a few minutes for the sake of storytelling. In reality, labour can be a lengthy process, lasting several hours. You may find it helpful to have a tablet or other entertainment device so that you can watch your favourite shows to pass the time during the early stages of labour. These devices are also useful after the delivery because babies sleep a lot for the first few days so you might get bored and frustrated if you have nothing to keep you occupied. Carry the chargers for your devices since you will probably need to recharge them.

Headphones or Portable Speaker

If you don’t own headphones or earbuds, this would be the perfect time to invest in good-quality headphones or a portable speaker. Listening to calming music can promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety levels during labour. This relaxation response can help to lower blood pressure and heart rate, creating a more conducive environment for labour progression. Music also stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural pain relievers. Studies have found that the soothing effects of music can help reduce the perception of pain and discomfort during both the latent and active phases of labour.

Most hospitals provide mesh underwear, maternity pads, adult diapers and other pregnancy essentials but do not make any assumptions. Contact your hospital for a full list of items that they will provide while you’re there as well as the items that they will give you to take home. This will help you decide whether you need to drop or include specific items when packing your hospital bag.
